Correspondence was received from Mr.
Paul Gravett, Interim Executive Director, Heritage BC, advising that on 2016
December 06, Peter van Loan, Conservative critic for Canadian Heritage and
National Historic Sites, introduced a Private Member’s Bill for the
rehabilitation of historic buildings in Canada. This Bill will have the
potential to encourage rehabilitation of properties in the Canadian Register
of Historic Places. Mr. Gravett is seeking support for the heritage tax
credit.
Arising from discussion, the
Commission introduced the following motion:

the Commission supports the proposed heritage tax credit.

Correspondence was received from Mr.
Paul Gravett, Interim Executive Director, Heritage BC advising the Province
is launching a funding program to celebrate BC communities and their
contribution to Canada to mark the 150th anniversary of Canada’s
Confederation.
Arising from discussion, the
Commission introduced the following motion:

THAT
staff apply for matching funding for the Burnaby Then and Now project.

A memorandum was received from Ms.
Deborah Tuyttens, Museum Services Supervisor, providing an update on work at
the Burnaby Village Museum. The update included the following:
Christmas:
·
successful
Christmas season with attendance of 51,755 (2nd highest on
record);
·
new
light displays & the Nine Ladies dancing in the rain;
·
new
Christmas singalong entertainer.
Upcoming Events:
·
Spring
Break 2017 March 13 – 24;
·
staff
working with a Burnaby School District focus group comprised of the district
aboriginal enhancement teacher and head teachers from Lakeview and Morley
schools to help update school programs to meet the new BC curriculum, which
focuses on First Nations perspectives and cultural diversity;
·
staff
working on ‘Burnaby Then and Now’ photography exhibit for the summer to
celebrate Burnaby’s 125th anniversary;
·
larger
Canada Day with additional entertainment as part of the Burnaby 125/Canada
150 events;
·
research
into the Museum’s pharmacy exhibit is underway.
Ms. Tuyttens further noted that:

Discovery
Days will be held in May/June;
·
the
City got a grant to enhance Canada Day celebrations as well as other events,
i.e. BC Day, World Rivers Day, etc.
Commissioner Gillis advised she has
a collection of pharmacy items from her father that she would like to donate
to the Museum.
Staff advised to contact Ms. Lisa
Codd, the Museum Curator.

Memorandum
from the Administrative Officer
Re:
“Burnaby Then and Now”
Celebrating
Burnaby 125 with Heritage Markers
|

A memorandum was received from the
Administrative Officer advising that Council, at the Open Council meeting
held on 2017 January 30, received and adopted the above noted report seeking
funding approval for a project to celebrate the City’s 125th
anniversary. The project will provide a more complete and inclusive picture
of Burnaby’s history through local stories and historical images, and would
complement the existing interpretive plaques and signs previously established
un the City’s ongoing Heritage Program.

The City Archivist
submitted a report presenting the 2016 Annual Report for the City of Burnaby
Archives.

Helen
Lee, Long Range Planner
Ms. Lee advised that staff submitted
nominations for Stop of Interest Signs to BC Government. Stop of Interest
Signs are intended to provide visible format for the interpretation of
people, places and events that shaped British Columbia. The City’s
nominations included Central Park (the first provincial park in BC), SFU (the
second largest post-secondary institution in BC and named after Simon Fraser,
a fur trader and explorer), and Mr. Kapoor Singh Siddoo (a pioneer
Indo-Canadian Sikh who founded the Kapoor Sawmills Ltd. and was instrumental
in increasing rights for East Indians).
Ms. Lee advised that staff contacted
Burnaby Neighbourhood House if they would be interested in organizing Jane’s
Walk; however, so far no response was received.
Ms. Lee provided an update on
Remembrance Day noting usual BurnabyNow newspaper ads and Honour Roll display
at the City Hall.
Ms. Lee advised that a new sign has
been installed at the Hart House.
Commissioner Pride
Commissioner Pride advised that the School
Book project that he is working on has been delayed due to a large number of
submissions, and should be finished by Spring 2017.
Commissioner Pride inquired
regarding Citizen Support Services’ brochure with information on
transportation and other services for seniors, and suggested providing this
brochure to the Burnaby Hospital.
Staff undertook to investigate.
Commissioner Gillis
Commissioner Gillis conveyed thanks
to staff and the City for displaying KINA Community Garland at the Burnaby
Village Museum. It was noted that a number of great comments were received.
