An ‘Open’ meeting of the Parks, Recreation and Culture Commission was held in the Council Chambers, Burnaby City Hall, 4949 Canada Way, Burnaby, B.C. on Wednesday, 2017 December 13 at 7:00 p.m.

Burnaby Minor Lacrosse Club
Re:  Jack Crosby Novice All-Star Tournament 2018

 

Ms. Susan Kirkby, BMLC Vice President/Registrar, requested a facility rental fee waiver for the use of Bill Copeland, Burnaby Lake and Kensington Arenas for the Jack Crosby Novice All-Star Tournament 2018 from July 05 to 08.

Note:  A report on this subject will be submitted at a future meeting.

 

Commissioner Loftus advised that it is a unique tournament at the novice level across America for the provincial championship.  It is a very prestigious sport event for Burnaby.  A new covered sports box will enhance the growth of minor lacrosse and many other sports.

 

 

b)

Parkinson Society British Columbia
Re:  Parkinson Society British Columbia Support Group

        - Waiver of Fee

 

Ms. Jean Blake, CEO, Parkinson Society British Columbia, requested a waiver of rental fees for the monthly meetings of the Parkinson Society British Columbia Support Group at Confederation Community Centre.

Note:  A report on this subject will be submitted at a future meeting.

Director's Report No. 11

The Director Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services submitted his Report No. 11, dated 2017 December 13, covering the following item.

i)

Special Outdoor Events 2018

 

Staff requested preliminary approval for outdoor events at Deer Lake Festival Lawn and special events at Swangard Stadium. The Deer Lake Festival Lawn events will include the annual Symphony in the Park, Burnaby Blues and Roots Festival and up to 12 ticketed concerts. The events at Swangard Stadium will include Burnaby Celebrates Canada Day, the annual European Festival, and up to 15 other special events.

It was recommended:

1.      THAT approval be granted for up to 12 outdoor events at Deer Lake Park Festival Lawn between 2018 May 01 and 2018 September 30, and up to 15 special events at Swangard Stadium between 2018 April 01 and 2018 November 01.

2.    THAT this report be forwarded to Council for approval.

INQUIRIES

 

 

Commissioner Loftus expressed appreciation of serving on the Parks, Recreation and Culture Commission for six years and thanked the Director and staff for their support.

 

 

On behalf of Council, the Acting Chair thanked Commissioner Loftus for his service on the Commission.

 

 

School Trustee Narang thanked the Parks, Recreation and Culture Commission and staff for the close relationship, coordination and collaboration with the School District to make Burnaby richer as a community. School Trustee Narang wished everyone a Happy New Year.

 

 

Commissioner Clark advised that the Burnaby Art Gallery Advisory Committee received information from staff that in 2017 there have been 150 new acquisitions for the Burnaby Art Gallery.  There will be some great exhibitions in 2018.  Staff were commended for their tremendous research work.  Commissioners were encouraged to attend the Pat Quinn Classic Hockey Tournament from December 27 to 30.  Tourism Burnaby invited the Commission to the VIP Reception this Saturday.

 

 

On behalf of staff, the Director thanked Commissioner Loftus for his service, insight, knowledge and dedication. 

 

 

The Acting Chair wished everyone a Merry Christmas.
