MINUTES

 

An Open meeting of the International Relations and Friendship Cities Committee was held in the Council Board Room, City Hall, 4949 Canada Way, Burnaby, B.C. on Thursday, 2019 March 21 at 12:30 p.m.

The Chair called the Open meeting to order at 12:50 p.m.

 

 

The Chair acknowledged the unceded, traditional, and ancestral lands of the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ and sḵwx̱wú7mesh speaking people, and extended appreciation for the opportunity to hold a meeting on this shared Coast Salish territory.

Report from the Executive Assistant to the Mayor

Re: 2019 International Relations and Friendship Cities Committee (IRFCC) Expenditure Authorization_______________________                  

 

 

The Executive Assistant to the Mayor submitted a report seeking expenditure authorization for 2019 IRFCC expenses.

The  Executive Assistant to the Mayor recommended:

1. THAT the Committee authorize expenditures to an annual maximum of $30,000 for delegation related activities from the IRFCC 2019 budget.

Report from the Executive Assistant to the Mayor

Re:  Sister City Proposal - Padua, Italy__________

 

 

The Executive Assistant to the Mayor submitted a report seeking consideration of a proposal for a Sister City relationship with Padua, Italy.

The  Executive Assistant to the Mayor recommended:

 

1. THAT a Sister City relationship with Padua, Italy be considered.

 

2. THAT His Worship, Mayor M. Hurley, on behalf of Council, send a letter to Ms. Antonia Ranieri, Gabinetto del Sindaco di Padova, in response to this proposal.

NEW BUSINESS

 

 

            Councillor Wang – Sister and Friendship City Relationships List

 

Councillor Wang inquired regarding the comprehensiveness of the Sister and Friendship City list, and noted there are possibly additional Memoranda of Understanding to be included on the City website listing of Sister and Friendship Cities.

 

Arising from discussion, the Committee requested the Councillor Wang provide information on possible missing information to staff, to assist with updating and validating the list.

           

Councillor Wang – Relationship Proposal - City in the Philippines

 

Councillor Wang advised the Committee that the Consul General of the Philippines, Vancouver, has expressed interest in a Sister/Friendship City relationship with a city in the Philippines.

 

Arising from discussion, the Committee requested this matter be considered at the 2019 April 24 meeting.

INQUIRIES

 

 

Councillor Wang – City of Burnaby Invitation Letter to Cities in China

 

Councillor Wang inquired regarding the feasibility of sending an invitation letter to all existing Sister and Friendship Cities in China to the Chinese Festival to be held at Swangard Stadium, Burnaby in 2019 July.

 

 

 

Arising from discussion, the Committee recommended that any invitation be sent by the Chinese Festival Organizing Committee and that staff provide contact information of Sister and Friendship Cities in China, if requested by the Organizing Committee.
