An Open meeting of the Executive Committee of Council was held in the Council Committee Room, Main Floor, City Hall, 4949 Canada Way, Burnaby, BC on Thursday, 2016 June 16 at 4:00 p.m.

Re: Odyssey of the Mind World Finals

Speaker:  Tammie Mark

 

Ms. Tammie Mark, Parent/Coach, accompanied by Ms. Kelly Mulhern, Parent/Coach, Ms. Katherine Robertson, Parent/Coach, Miss Kathryn Mah (Grade 4) and Mr. Spencer Mah (Grade 7) from the Buckingham Elementary School, appeared before the Committee providing a brief overview of the Odyssey of the Mind competition program in Buckingham Elementary School. 

 

Ms. Mark noted that this program is driven by parent/volunteer coaches, and teaches the students 21st century skills, i.e. problem solving and creative and critical thinking, interpersonal and collaborative communication, global awareness, intellectual curiosity, self-direction, accountability, adaptability and resilience.

 

The speaker noted that three teams (7 students per team) from the Buckingham Elementary and one team from the Montecito Elementary won gold medals in the Provincials this year, and qualified for the World Finals in Iowa.

 

Ms. Mark conveyed thanks to the Committee for a grant received for travel expenses, and requested the Committee consider an allocation of travel grants on a team basis, rather than a school basis.

 

The Chair thanked the delegation for their presentation and advised that the Committee and Council are reviewing the Terms of Reference and Guidelines for awarding the grants, and will take this information into advisement.

Correspondence was received from Mr. Alamin Pirani, Executive Director, Scouts Canada Pacific Coast Council, expressing appreciation to the City for funding in support of Scouting programs for Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Venturers and Rovers.

Alun-Alun, Indonesian Archipelago Night

 

 

An application was received from the Permai BC Association for the Alun-Alun, Indonesian Archipelago Night to be held at the Burnaby Lake Clubhouse on 2016 August 13.  Alun-Alun is a Javanese Word for a large open common space found in villages, towns or cities in Indonesia that functions as the heart of the city where public spectacle, celebrations and entertainment are usually held.  With the spirit of unity and sense of community, the Permai BC Association is planning a night market to celebrate the 71st anniversary of Indonesia's Independence (typically held on August 17).  Activities will include cultural performances, entertainment, food and market place.

Alta Vista Playground Community Picnic

 

 

An application was received from the Friends of Alta Vista for the annual Alta Vista Playground Community Picnic to be held at Alta Vista Playground on 2016 September 10.  The picnic started in 1994 to celebrate the installation of new playground equipment in the park and has become a community tradition.  Neighbours gather to have fun, meet and socialize with food, entertainment, information and community displays and crafts along with children's entertainment and activities.

An application was received from the Korean Traditional Arts Society (KTAS) for the International Traditional Drum Dance Festival to be held at the James Cowan Theatre, Shadbolt Centre for the Arts on 2016 June 29.  The festival celebrates both Canada Day and the 30th anniversary of Expo '86 and will feature a program of multicultural drum and dance performances.

An application was received from the Burnaby North Road BIA for the Korean Community Day to be held at the North Road Centre Mall, 4501 North Road on 2016 September 10.  This 3rd annual event will showcase some of the exciting aspects of traditional Korean artistry including drumming and martial arts; the popular K-Pop singing contest, a tea garden and an art walk.  Demonstrations, food sampling, interactive displays, a market place and children's performers and activities will also be part of the day.
