An Open meeting of the Executive Committee of Council was held in the Council Committee Room, main floor, City Hall, 4949 Canada Way, Burnaby, BC on Thursday, 2016 October 20 at 5:00 p.m.

CALL TO ORDER

 

            PRESENT:    Councillor Sav Dhaliwal, Chair

The Chair called the Open meeting to order at 5:09 p.m.

Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland

Re: Mentoring Programs

Speaker: Brenda Gershkovitch, Executive Director

 

Ms. Brenda Gershkovitch, Executive Director of Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland, appeared before the Committee providing an overview of programs offered by the organization.

 

The speaker noted that the Big Sisters offer three programs to the girls aged 7 to 17:

     1. One-to-one Program (adult mentoring a child)

     2. Study Buddy (one-to-one academic mentorship)

     3. Go Girls (healthy lifestyles for girls aged 10 – 14)

 

Over the past four years the Big Sisters served the girls in Metro Vancouver (with 20% in Burnaby) as follows:

     2012 – 623 girls

     2013 – 695 girls

     2014 – 767 girls

     2015 – 819 girls

 

Ms. Gershkovitch advised that the girls are paired with volunteers based on character, desires and goals (never on ethnicity or religion), and this cross-culture experience has been very rewarding.

 

The speaker noted the organization has 23 employees, and many dedicated volunteers who are highly trained, screened and supervised.

 

In conclusion, Ms. Gershkovitch thanked the City of Burnaby for their support over the years.

A memorandum was received from the City Clerk advising that Council, at its Open meeting held on 2016 October 03, REFERRED the above noted grant application back to the Executive Committee of Council – see Item 8(a).

Report from the Director Planning and Building

Re: 2017 Lease Grants - Community Resource Centres

 

The Director Planning and Building submitted a report proposing 2017 lease grants for non-profit tenants at the Holdom, Edmonds, Brentwood, Metrotown, McKercher and Pioneer Community Resource Centres.

The Director Planning and Building recommended:

1. THAT Council be requested to approve the proposed 2017 lease grants for community resource centre tenants, as outlined in Table 1, attached, of this report.

2.  THAT Council be requested to authorize staff to make the appropriate 2017 lease renewal arrangements with Holdom, Edmonds, Brentwood, Metrotown, McKercher and Pioneer Community Resource Centre tenants.

Community Programming

 

 

An application was received from Volunteer Burnaby requesting a grant to assist with the cost of community programming provided by the organization to the citizens of Burnaby.

2013 - $14,000

THAT a grant in the amount of 12,000 be awarded to Volunteer Burnaby to assist with the cost of community programming provided by the organization to the citizens of Burnaby for 2016.

Gift Wrap Program 2016

 

 

An application was received from Volunteer Burnaby requesting an in-kind grant to cover printing costs of Gift Wrapping Services for the Christmas Season 2016 at Brentwood Town Centre.

$1,000 in-kind printing

2015 - $1,000 in-kind printing

2014 - $1,000 in-kind printing

2013 - $1,000 in-kind printing
