An Open meeting of the Executive Committee of Council was held in the Council Committee Room, Main Floor, City Hall, 4949 Canada Way, Burnaby, BC on Tuesday, 2016 February 16 at 5:00 p.m.

Report from the Director Planning & Building

Re: McKercher Community Resource Centre - Remainder

2016 Lease Grant_________________________________

 

The Director Planning and Building submitted a report proposing a remainder 2016 lease grant for the non-profit tenant of McKercher Community Resource Centre.

The Director Planning and Building recommended:

1. THAT the Committee request Council to approve the proposed remainder 2016 lease grant for the non-profit tenant (Burnaby Family Life) of McKercher Community Resource Centre, as outlined below in Section 4.0.

2. THAT a copy of this report be forwarded for information, following Council approval, to Mr. Michel Pouliot, Executive Director of Burnaby Family Life at 102 - 2101 Holdom Avenue, Burnaby, BC V5B 0A4.

#16-N-001 - Scandinavian Cultural Society

 

Leif Erikson Day Festival

 

 

An application was received from the Scandinavian Cultural Society requesting a grant to support the Leif Erikson Day Festival to be held on 2016 October 15-16 at the Scandinavian Community Centre.  This festival celebrates Leif Erikson Day and annually features the history, current endeavours and contributions that one particular Nordic Country has made to Canada by its emigrants.  Sweden is the featured country for 2016.  Activities include talks and presentations by experts, music and folkdance, craft workshops, displays and exhibitions, film, children’s programming and cultural foods.

Smooth as Silk: VICO in Concert

 

 

An application was received from the Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra Society (VICO) requesting a grant to support the Smooth as Silk: VICO in Concert event on 2016 May 1 at Garden Village Church (4950 Barker Crescent).  The proposed concert will feature the 14 member VICO ensemble, with an all Canadian programme including five world premieres by Canadian composers, and will showcase international guest artists and Chinese and Vietnamese plucked instruments.

Lyrids Folk Dance Festival

 

 

An application was received from the Burnaby International Folk Dancers Club requesting a grant in support of the Lyrids Folk Dance Festival to be held on 2016 April 22-24 at the Gizeh Centre (2550 Wayburne Drive). The Lyrids Folk Dance festival is intended to be a multi-faceted experience to share cultures from the Balkans and its neighbours and to foster understanding and interest in the cultures through music and dance. The festival will feature workshops with internationally recognized teachers - this year focusing on Balkan, Ukrainian and Moldovan dances - along with cultural sessions focused on singing and drumming.

Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY)

 

 

 

An application was received from MOSAIC requesting a grant to assist with the costs of 100 t-shirts for HIPPY program graduates (mothers and children), as well as a guest attendance at their graduation event in March 2016. HIPPY is an evidence-based program that works with families in the home to support parents, primarily mothers, in their critical role as their child’s first teacher.

An application was received from Burnaby Community Services requesting a grant toward the cost of administering the Burnaby Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Credit Program for the balance of 2015.  The Recreation Credit program provides low-income residents with credits that can be used towards Burnaby Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services programs and admissions.
