Dr. Michelle Vanchu-Orosco, Project Coordinator and Ms.
Sarah Bollozos, Director of Major Gifts, representing the SFU Faculty
of Education, appeared before the Commission providing an overview of
‘Sharing the Wisdom of Our Elders: From Digital Storytelling to Life Legacy’
project.
Ms. Bollozos advised that SFU is
celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and was recognized as
Canada's number one comprehensive research university by Maclean’s rankings
in 2015. With campuses in Vancouver, Burnaby and Surrey, SFU has eight
faculties, delivering almost 150 programs to over 35,000 students.
Dr. Vanchu-Orosco noted that the
Digital Storytelling Project, in partnership with the City of Burnaby
(primarily through the Burnaby Village Museum), works with older adults to
create short movies of significant moments in seniors’ lives using simple
digital technology. These stories are shared on the internet and in
community meetings providing opportunities for the storytellers and the
audience to connect, learn, and socialize.
The speaker provided a short video
clip of Janet Duxbury’s story.
To date, the SFU has provided five
workshops to over 40 participants, capturing 25 stories.
Ms. Bollozos advised that the SFU is
currently in the process of applying for additional funding to continue this
project for the next 5 years.
In conclusion, Ms. Bollozos conveyed
appreciation to the Commission and the City for their ongoing support.
