An Open meeting of the Community Heritage Commission was held in the Council Committee Room, Burnaby City Hall, 4949 Canada Way, Burnaby, B.C. on Thursday, 2016 February 04 at 6:00 p.m.

CALL TO ORDER

The Chair called the Open meeting to order at 6:00 p.m.

 

            The Chair expressed deepest condolences, on behalf of the Commission, to Ms.             Ruby Johnson on the passing of her son.  A card of condolences will be send to           Ms. Johnson on behalf of the Commission.

 

            The Chair welcomed Ms. Maurya Biswell as a new member of the Commission.

SFU Faculty of Education

Re: Digital Storytelling for Seniors Project

Speakers: Dr. Michelle Vanchu-Orosco, Project Coordinator

                  Ms. Sarah Bollozos, Director of Major Gifts

 

 

Dr. Michelle Vanchu-Orosco, Project Coordinator and Ms. Sarah Bollozos, Director of Major Gifts, representing the SFU Faculty of Education, appeared before the Commission providing an overview of ‘Sharing the Wisdom of Our Elders: From Digital Storytelling to Life Legacy’ project.

 

Ms. Bollozos advised that SFU is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and was recognized as Canada's number one comprehensive research university by Maclean’s rankings in 2015.  With campuses in Vancouver, Burnaby and Surrey, SFU has eight faculties, delivering almost 150 programs to over 35,000 students.

 

Dr. Vanchu-Orosco noted that the Digital Storytelling Project, in partnership with the City of Burnaby (primarily through the Burnaby Village Museum), works with older adults to create short movies of significant moments in seniors’ lives using simple digital technology.  These stories are shared on the internet and in community meetings providing opportunities for the storytellers and the audience to connect, learn, and socialize. 

 

The speaker provided a short video clip of Janet Duxbury’s story.

 

To date, the SFU has provided five workshops to over 40 participants, capturing 25 stories. 

 

Ms. Bollozos advised that the SFU is currently in the process of applying for additional funding to continue this project for the next 5 years.

 

In conclusion, Ms. Bollozos conveyed appreciation to the Commission and the City for their ongoing support.

 

Ms. Tuytten acknowledged Ms. Lisa Codd, Museum Curator (present at the portion of the meeting) who worked extensively on this project.

Correspondence from Philip Finlayson

Re: Technology Sharing_____________

 

 

Correspondence was received from Commissioner Finlayson advising that he attended the annual Heritage and Cultural Planners and Professionals meeting in November 2015.  Following the presentation by Ms. Pasch on Heritage Burnaby’s online collection, a discussion ensued on how to share archival information and heritage resources with the public.

 

Commissioner Finlayson suggested the City investigate the feasibility of sharing the technology with other museums and archives.

Correspondence from BC Labour Heritage Centre

Re: Remembering Working People: Plaques Around the         Province Project__________________________________

 

 

Correspondence was received from Ken Novakowski, Chairperson, BC Labour Heritage Centre inviting cities to participate in the new 'Remembering Working People: Plaques Around the Province Project', and seeking nominations.  This project will increase public awareness and be a permanent reminder of the history of working people in BC.

There are two important aspects of this project: 1) to identify and catalogue existing memorials that fit the Project’s criteria; and 2) to install a new series of cast bronze plaques which will document events, actions, episodes, movements, experiences, groups, individuals or places that have not been recognized to date.

Correspondence from Heritage BC

Re:  Heritage Week, 2016 February 15 - 22

Distinctive Destinations: Experience Historic Places

 

 

Correspondence was received from Heritage BC advising that this year's Heritage Week’s `theme, which is set by the National Trust for Canada, is ‘Distinctive Destinations: Experience Historic Places’.  Heritage Week will be celebrated on 2016 February 15 – 22.

 

c)

Memorandum from Museum Services Supervisor

Re: Burnaby Village Museum Updates__________

 

 

Ms. Deborah Tuyttens, Museum Services Supervisor submitted a memorandum providing the following update on work at the Burnaby Village Museum:

·         Heritage Christmas Season was very successful (50,000 attended, 31,000 carousel rides, 1,500 volunteer hours;

·         Staff is working on a ‘technology now and then’ for summer 2016;

·         BVM is working with the SFU on Festival of Learning (to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the University);

·         Spring Break opening on March 14 – 24 will offer more interpreted exhibits, longer hours and free admission.  New ‘Adventure Guide’ booklet, available for purchase, will engage visitors in activities around the Village;

·         Spring Break camps are already filling up, and blacksmithing classes are full and waitlisted.

**Commissioner Finlayson left the meeting at 6:48 p.m. and did not return.**

Re: City of Burnaby Archives Annual Report 2015

 

 

The City Archivist submitted a report presenting the 2015 Annual Report of the City of Burnaby Archives.

The City Archivist recommended:

Report from the Director Planning & Building

Burnaby Art Gallery, 6344 Deer Lake Avenue_____

 

 

The Director Planning and Building submitted a report seeking approval for the issuance of a Heritage Alteration Permit for Ceperley Mansion "Fairacres".

The Director Planning and Building recommended:

1. THAT Council approve issuance of a Heritage Alteration Permit for Ceperley Mansion located at 6344 Deer Lake Avenue, as outlined in this report.

NEW BUSINESS

 

 

a)

Heritage BC Award - Heritage Burnaby Website

 

 

Ms. Rebecca Pasch, Archivist advised that the City of Burnaby won the Heritage BC Award of Recognition, in the Heritage Education & Awareness category, for the Heritage Burnaby Website. An Award Ceremony will be held on Thursday, 2016 February 18 at The Imperial, 319 Main Street, Vancouver at 6:00 p.m.

Ms. Pasch will be attending the Gala Ceremony to receive the award on behalf of the City.

 

Commissioner Bell

 

Commissioner Bell advised that Mr. Ivan Sayers is looking for space to house his extensive collection of women’s historic clothing.   Mr. Sayers has one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of historic clothing in private hands in Canada, possibly in North America.

 

It was noted that the Port Moody Heritage Society is hosting a live Fashion Show on Sunday, 2016 February 28 at the Inlet Theatre.

 

City Archivist

 

Ms. Pasch advised that the transfer of documents and donations from Capitol Hill Community Hall Association is on hold due to a pest infestation. 

 

Councillor Jordan

 

Councillor Jordan noted she gave a speech at Normanna’s Board Meeting on the heritage aspect of the Shaw House, located on the grounds of the Normanna Rest Home development. The Shaw House is 125 years old this year.
