An Open meeting of the International Relations & Friendship Cities Committee was held in the Council Committee Room, Burnaby City Hall, 4949 Canada Way, Burnaby, B.C. on Wednesday, 2015 April 29 at 10:00 a.m.

The Chair called the Open meeting to order at 10:05 a.m.

 

The Chair extended a welcome to Mr. Yoshi, a reporter from Vancouver Shinpo, a Japanese newspaper.

Memorandum from Administrative Assistant to the Mayor

Re: 50th Anniversary Kushiro Sister City Visit - Draft Itinerary

 

 

 

A memorandum was received from the Administrative Assistant to the Mayor providing an overview and discussion points for the 50th Anniversary Sister City Visit. Staff submitted a DRAFT itinerary for the Committee’s review in hosting the Official Sister City Delegation from Kushiro on 2015 July 07 – 11.

 

The Committee requested an education component be given consideration as Second Street community school students have an existing relationship with Kushiro.

A)

Report from Administrative Assistant to the Mayor

Re: 50th Anniversary of Sister City Relations between Burnaby and Kushiro, Japan

 

 

A report was received from the Administrative Assistant to the Mayor regarding the 50th Anniversary of Sister City Relations between Burnaby & Kushiro, Japan.

The Administrative Assistant to the Mayor recommended:

1.     THAT Council approve $8,000 in financial support for the Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Center to off-set costs related to celebrations and events planned for the 50th Anniversary of the Sister City relationship between Burnaby and Kushiro.

2.    THAT a copy of this report be forwarded to Roger Lemire, Executive Director, Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Center, 6688 Southoaks Crescent, Burnaby BC V5E 4M7.

NEW BUSINESS

 

 

Councillor Wang

 

Councillor Wang advised that the 3rd China-South Asia Expo and 23rd China Kunming Import and Export Fair, co-hosted by the Chinese Ministry of Commerce and the People’s Government of Yunnan Province, is scheduled to be held in Kunming on 2015 June 12 – 16.

 

Arising from discussion, Councillor Calendino was granted leave to introduce the following motion:

Councillor Wang advised that members of a delegation from Zhongshan will be attending the Chinese Festival at Swangard Stadium on 2015 August 16.  The speaker suggested consideration be given for a ribbon cutting ceremony to take place during the festival that would unveil the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen statue.
