An Open meeting of the Parks, Recreation and Culture Commission was held in the Council Chambers, City Hall, 4949 Canada Way, Burnaby, B.C. on Wednesday, 2018 September 19 at 7:07 p.m.

The Chair called the Open Commission Meeting to order at 7:07 p.m.

PRESENTATION

Special Cultural Events 2018

Speaker:  David Jordan, Arts Service Manager

 

Mr. David Jordan, Arts Service Manager, presented a brief overview of the special cultural events held in the summer. 2018 events were all well attended with record setting numbers at Civic Square movie nights, Symphony in the Park and the Blues and Roots Festival.

Correspondence from Ms. Jennifer Nesselroad
Re: 
Kensington Pool – Support of Individuals with Disabilities

 

Correspondence was received from Ms. Jennifer Nesselroad regarding accessibility concerns at Kensington Pool. The concerns were related to school communication with staff, the dated nature of the pool amenities and communication with Ms. Nesselroad. Staff responded to the writer that the accessibility issues were addressed. 

 

b)

Correspondence from Ms. Shelley Hamilton
Re: 
Off-Leash Dog Park Petition_________

 

Correspondence was received from Ms. Shelley Hamilton requesting that an optional part-time off-leash dog park be created at the eastern end of Fraser Foreshore Park. In addition, a petition with 165 signatures was provided. Staff stated that they are preparing a report on the feasibility and desirability of developing additional facilities for dogs in parks. This request will be considered within the context of that report.

The Acting Director Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services submitted his Report No. 8, dated 2018 September 19, covering the following items listed as 1 – 2.

 

i)

A New Happy Heart Program at Confederation Centre

 

The Director Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services submitted a report to provide information regarding the discontinuation of the YMCA Healthy Heart Program and the creation of a Heart Happy Program at Confederation Centre.

 

The Director Parks, Recreation and Culture Services recommended:

 

1.    THAT Commission receive this report for information.

The Director Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services submitted a report to provide information on the establishment of two operating reserves, one for funding the operating program for the Burnaby Art Gallery and one for the acquisition of art. 

 

The Director Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services recommended:

NEW BUSINESS

 

 

A request was received from the Recreation Foundation of BC for support of the 2018 RecreOPEN Golf Tournament.

THAT four green fees for the Riverway Golf Course be donated to the Recreation Foundation of BC for their annual fundraiser, the 2018 RecreOPEN Golf Tournament.
