An Open meeting of the Executive Committee of Council was held in the Council Committee Room, Main Floor, City Hall, 4949 Canada Way, Burnaby, BC on Thursday, 2016 May 19 at 5:00 p.m.

The Chair called the Open meeting to order at 5:08 p.m.

Burnaby Community Services

Re: Core Programs and Publications

Speaker: Stephen D'Souza, Executive Director

                (see Item 9(a))

 

Mr. Stephen D'Souza, Executive Director, Burnaby Community Services appeared before the Committee conveying thanks to the City for support provided to the organization over the years.

Mr. D’Souza advised that Burnaby Community Connections is vision-inspired, mission-driven and values-guided.  The organization enhances lives and empowers citizens by connecting people to services and fostering connections in the community.  Not only does Burnaby Community Connections help people access community resources and services, but also creates opportunities for individuals, businesses, unions, organizations and government to directly help those in need and build a stronger community.

 

The speaker provided an overview of programs and publications, i.e. Seniors Transportation (with 644 drives in 2015), Camping Bureau (subsidy for 427 kids to attend camps), Christmas Bureau (helped 3,574 people), Recreation Credit, and Community Resource Guide (produce 60,000 publications), just to name a few.

 

Mr. D’Souza noted that Burnaby Community Connections partner with a number of other organizations, i.e. Brentwood Community Resource Centre, Burnaby Meals on Wheels, Burnaby Seniors Outreach Society, Voices of Burnaby Seniors, Burnaby Task Force on Homelessness, Burnaby Food First, and BC Poverty Reduction Coalition.

 

In conclusion, the speaker provided an overview of revenue and expenses for the organization, and outlined some of the future needs of the organization, i.e. toy room for Christmas Bureau, union connections, housing strategy.

Volunteer Burnaby

Re: Work in the Community

Speakers:  Dave Baspaly, Executive Director

                   Jeffrey Scheffel, Community Developer

 

Mr. Dave Baspaly, Executive Director, and Mr. Jeffrey Scheffel, Community Developer, Volunteer Burnaby appeared before the Committee conveying thanks to the City for support provided to the organization over the years.

 

Mr. Baspaly noted that Volunteer Burnaby is committed to promoting volunteerism and to providing the residents of Burnaby and New Westminster the opportunity to become involved as volunteers.

 

The speaker noted that the organization participates in a number of special events, i.e. Burnaby Festival of Volunteers, Hats Off Day, Inclusion Festival, Canada Day at Burnaby Village Museum, SFU Big Fair, Edmonds Festival of Lights, BCIT Volunteer Fair, Volunteer Burnaby Gift Wrap program, just to name a few.

 

In conclusion, Mr. Baspaly noted that Volunteer Burnaby is a member driven organization, with the most active on-line database for volunteer opportunities in BC - 41,500 visitors per months and averaging 120 volunteer positions listed in Burnaby on any given day.

 

The Committee requested to enter into a Closed session at this time from which public is excluded according to Sections 90 and 92 of the Community Charter.

Re: Resolution – Fort McMurray________

 

Correspondence was received from City of Cranbrook advising that Cranbrook City Council, at their regular Council meeting on 2016 May 09, passed a resolution encouraging province-wide support from all BC Local Governments for Fort McMurray residents.

 

Arising from discussion, the following motion was introduced:

An application was received from Ms. Holly Lloyd, Head Teacher/Coach, Montecito Elementary School, and Mr. Kurt Gurney, Principal/Fan, Buckingham Elementary School,  requesting a grant to assist with travel expenses for four teams from two schools to participate at the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals competition to be held on 2016 May 25 – 29 in Ames, Iowa.

Distress Services Program

 

 

An application was received from the Crisis Intervention and Suicide Prevention Centre of BC requesting a grant in the amount of $4,000 in support for technology upgrades for the 2016 Distress Services Program.  The Crisis Centre provides life-saving services and programs to youth, adults and seniors in distress.
