The Chair requested staff provide an
update of the Burnaby Village Museum activities.
Burnaby Village Museum
Ms. Deborah Tuyttens, Museum Service Supervisor, advised
that:
·
3,600 people
attended the CUPE Labour Day celebration at the Museum;
·
95,000 visitors
have attended the Burnaby Village Museum to date in 2019;
·
the Carousel
Plaza project is currently underway which will provide a covered walkway and
gathering spots. Construction is anticipated to be completed by 2020 March;
and
·
the Museum will
be hosting World River’s Day on 2019 September 22 and the Halloween Haunted
Village event which will take place on 2019 October 25 - 28.
Burnaby Village Museum - Asia Across
the Pacific Tours
Commissioner Liu coordinated four days of
visits to the BVM in 2019 August for guests to experience the site in three
parts on connecting Chinese Canadian Heritage with Burnaby. The three part
tours included:
1. Demonstration Market
Garden;
2. Across the Pacific
Exhibit; and
3.
Way
Sang Yuen Wat Kee traditional Chinese medicine store.
Commissioner Liu advised that the
medicine store has a rare, historic photograph of Dr. Sun Yat-sen in its
collection. The photograph was taken by photographer Mr. Yucho Chow in
1910 at his studio at 5 West Pender during one of Dr. Sun's three visits to the
Chinese Freemasons (1897, 1910 and 1911),
which was also located on 5 West Pender in Vancouver's Chinatown.
The following tours were conducted:

2019
August 01, Mr. George Chow, BC Minister of State for Trade, with Burnaby MLAs
Ms. Anne Kang and Ms. Katrina Chen; Mayor Hurley and Councillor Jordan,
Councillor Wang, and Councillor McDonell; representatives of Tourism Burnaby,
Burnaby RCMP, and St. John Ambulance Burnaby Division were given a tour of
the Museum by City staff;
·
2019
August 16 & 17, three group visits, organized and promoted by Pacific
Canada Heritage Centre, Museum of Migration were led by "Across the
Pacific" co-curator, Ms. Denise Fong; and
·
On
2019 August 18, Commissioner Liu welcomed Ms. Wendy Yip, UBC Ambassador,
family and friends, on a tour led by BVM curator, Ms. Jane Lemke.
The Commission thanked Commissioner
Liu for his promotion of the Chinese Canadian Heritage exhibits at the Museum
this season.
Commissioner Whitehouse – Carousel
Shop, History Books
Commissioner Whitehouse queried the possibility of
providing more books on the history of Burnaby in the Carousel Shop.
Staff
undertook to investigate the historical book inventory in the Carousel Shop.
Commissioner Whitehouse requested
information regarding a second printing of the book entitled Tram Memories
in Celebration of the Restoration of Interurban Tram 1223. This book
recollects stories of passengers that rode the tram in the 1940s and 1950s.
Staff advised that the digital copy
of the original book is with the Planning and Building Department.
Arising from discussion, the
following motion was introduced:

advisability and feasibility of printing a 2nd edition of Tram
Memories in Celebration of the Restoration of Interurban Tram 1223, and

Burnaby Neighbourhood History Speaker Series
Ms. Deborah Tuyttens, Museum Service Supervisor, advised
that several of the Burnaby Neighbourhood History tours are fully booked. If
anyone is interested in attending, they must register through the Burnaby
Public Library.
