REQUEST: (O) $10,000

An operating grant application was received from the BC Society of Model Engineers to offset the cost of  annual liability insurance premiums. The 2021 renewal is expected to rise 20%, and the largest operating expense incurred by the society. Their operating season is Easter to Thanksgiving, and with reduced park capacity and social distancing, attendance has been cut in half.

An operating grant application was received from the Burnaby Volunteer Centre Society to offset costs for office supplies, office maintenance, advertising, and the Community Engagement/Developer position. The organization collaborates with other community organizations and leaders to identify needs, mobilize volunteers to deliver community events throughout the City.

A program grant application was received in support of their Crisis Centre Suicide Bereavement Project from 2021 June 30 to 2022 May 31. This project will organize three separate support groups for 30-40 participants. Funding will provide the opportunity for Burnaby community engagement and promotion of the project to Burnaby residents.

An operating grant application was received to offset costs associated with salaries and benefits from 2021 April 01 to 2022 March 31. Part-time Crisis Service responders have been hired to meet the increased demand for a 24/7 distress line and online distress chat service; mental health and suicide support workshops for youth; suicide prevention workshops for health care workers, school staff, police, emergency services staff, youth workers, and older adult care providers.

A program grant application was received from Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver in support of their Mentoring with Math program. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Mentoring with Math was delivered as an e-mentoring program via Zoom. This year’s goal is to serve 55 children, with a mix of on-site and virtual programming.

REQUEST: (P) $10,000

A program grant application was received from Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland in support of their Big Sisters Mentoring program. Burnaby youth represent over 19% of the waiting list to be matched with a caring adult mentor. It costs the organization $2,000 per match for one year. Funding support will provide new matches for Burnaby youth in 2021.

A program grant application was received from the Burnaby Seniors Outreach Services Society in support of their Outreach Programs. The Society promotes emotional health and well-being of seniors and their caregivers through programs including Senior Peer Support, Caregiver Support, and Dementia Friendly Café.

REQUEST: (P) $27,000 + (O) $5,000 = $32,000

A program grant application was received in support of their Outreach Programs for 2021. The funds would be distributed as follows; $8,000 to support the Seniors Transportation Program where screened volunteer drivers accompany seniors to critical medical and dental appointments; $10,000 towards the Burnaby Christmas Bureau which assists low-income families and children, isolated seniors and individuals who are at risk of homelessness; and $9,000 to connect people to services through the annual creation and distribution of various community publications.

An operating grant application was received to assist with costs of payroll, rent, utilities, insurance and office supplies. During COVID-19, additional part-time staff were required as screeners for their programs to ensure the health and safety of their clients.
