An ‘Open’ meeting of the Parks, Recreation and Culture Commission was held in the Council Chambers, Burnaby City Hall, 4949 Canada Way, Burnaby, B.C. on Wednesday, 2015 July 15 at 7:00p.m..

(a) The Director Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services submitted his Report No. 07, dated 2015 July 15, covering the following items listed i-v.

 

i)

Capitol Hill Hall License Renewal

 

The Director Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services submitted a report to seek Council approval for the renewal of the license agreement with the Capitol Hill Community Hall Association.

The Director Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services recommended:

1.  THAT approval be given for the renewal of the license agreement with the Capitol Hill Community Hall Association, for a further five year term beginning the 1st day of July, 2015; with minor revisions to the terms and conditions as outlined in this report.

2.  THAT Council be requested to concur.

Lochdale Hall License Renewal

 

The Director Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services submitted a report to seek Council approval for the renewal of the license agreement with the Lochdale Hall Community Association.

The Director Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services recommended:

1.  THAT approval be given for the renewal of the license agreement with the Lochdale Hall Community Association, for a further five year term beginning the 1st day of July, 2015: with minor revisions to the terms and conditions as outlined in this report.

2.  THAT Council be requested to concur.

CUPE Local #23 - Carousel Free Ride Day

 

The Director Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services submitted a report to seek Commission approval for the Commission and C.U.P.E. Co-Sponsorship of a Free Day on the Carousel.

The Director Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services recommended:

1.  THAT funds be allocated to co-sponsor with C.U.P.E Local 23 a free ride on Monday, 2015 September 07 at the Carousel at Burnaby Village Museum.

2.  THAT a copy of this report be sent to C.U.P.E. Local 23.

iv)

Playground Grant Request - Capitol Hill Elementary School

 

The Director Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services submitted a report to request funding from the Playground Development Budget for Capitol Hill Elementary School.

The Director Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services recommended:

1.  THAT the playground development grant request from Capitol Hill Elementary School be approved.

2.  THAT a copy of this report be forwarded to Ariel Pavic, Capitol Hill Elementary PAC Vice Chair and Kelly Chow, Capitol Hill Elementary Principal.

3.  THAT Council be requested to authorize the City enter into an agreement with the Burnaby School District for the contribution to the cost of the playground upgrades as detailed in this report.

v)

Burnaby Community Schools Strategic Plan

 

The Director Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services submitted a report seeking endorsement of the new strategic plan for Burnaby community schools.

The Director Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services recommended:

1.  THAT Commission endorse the Burnaby Community School Review titled, "Developing an Enhanced Model of Community Schools", as detailed in this report.

2.  THAT Council be requested to concur.

5.

NEW BUSINESS

 

 

School Trustee Chen thanked the Commission for endorsing Burnaby's Strategic Plan.   School Trustee Chen also thanked the Commission for the Playground Grant approval for Capitol Hill and for allowing for the grants for the schools.   The funds available through the Playground Development Grant assist the PAC's with their fundraising efforts for playgrounds.  Thank you to the Commission on behalf of the schools.

“THAT four green fees for Riverway Golf Course be donated to the Recreation Foundation B.C. for the 21st Annual RecreOpen Golf Tournament.”

After the meeting was adjourned an audience member Mr. George McLachrie - President of the Burnaby Tennis Club asked if he could address Commission. 

 

George wanted to take the time to thank the Parks Staff on behalf of the Board of Directors of the Burnaby Tennis Club.  The Club is most appreciative of the efforts of the City of Burnaby to support the club and tennis. The Club just finished hosting the BC High School Championships and the Burnaby Open Tennis Tournament (2nd largest tournament in the Province next to the Stanley Park Open) and received many compliments on the appearance and playing conditions of the courts. Mr. McLachrie feels that this is due to the efforts of Parks and Recreation Staff; Dean Pelletier, Andre Kolber. Greg Cecchi, Joe Guglielmi and Peggy McMillan and other staff involved.
