An Open meeting of the City Council
was held in the Council Committee Room, Burnaby City Hall, 4949 Canada Way,
Burnaby, B.C. on Monday, 2016 May 09 at 6:30 p.m. followed immediately by a
Closed meeting from which the public was excluded. At the conclusion of the
Closed meeting, the Open meeting was reconvened at 7:00 p.m. in the Council
Chamber.

Cheryl Reesor, Strategic Directions Committee Chair, Burnaby
Neighbourhood House appeared before Council to share information on the
community programs and services the Burnaby Neighbourhood House provides to
Burnaby residents.
Burnaby Neighbourhood House services
are accessed by children, youth, immigrants and seniors, representing a
variety of cultures and backgrounds. Current key program areas include:
family resources, school age childcare, youth leadership, seniors’ outreach
and social activities, community support and engagement and overall community
outreach.
Ms. Reesor and Mr. Kashima spoke to
the population increase in North Burnaby and outlined potential service gaps
they are hoping to address. Partnerships with other organizations are being
explored to identify less expensive centre location options, as operating and
rental costs continue to increase.
Council expressed their heartfelt
thanks for all that Burnaby Neighbourhood House do in support of Burnaby’s
community members.

Mr. Chris Bayliss, Executive Director,
Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau appeared before Council to thank the City of
Burnaby for all the support and leadership in support of the Toy Run and
Christmas Bureau throughout the holiday season.
Council thanked the Christmas Bureau
for their contributions and dedication to making the holidays a special time
for Burnaby residents.

BC Nurses' Union
Re:
George Derby Centre

Ms. Gayle Duteil, President and Ms.
Christine Sorensen,
Vice President, BC Nurses' Union appeared before Council to bring to light
the layoffs that are taking place at the George Derby Centre. Funding
provided by Fraser Health and Veteran Affairs is inadequate to maintain existing
care givers. Today, the first day of National Nursing Week, 54 nurses were
issued layoff notices.
Council shared its disappointment
with recent changes in Federal and Provincial health care policy and the
resulting negative impact on healthcare provision.
