An application was received from Take a Hike Youth at Risk Foundation in support of their Burnaby Take a Hike Program from 2021 September 01 to 2022 June 30. The no-cost, volunteer-based, full-time mental health and emotional well-being program engages vulnerable youth (ages 15 to 18) in schools and the community. Youth are referred to the program by the School District, and accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Approximately 30-50% of participants self-identify as Indigenous, additional 25% are visible minorities, 70-80% have a financial need, and 15-20% have been involved in the foster care system. Through these programs, youth become resilient and gain skills needed to navigate challenges such as attaining higher education, securing employment, finding housing and building healthy relationships. The program serves approximately 20 youth who engage in 200 days of programming, and benefits approximately 120 residents per year. Prior to COVID-19 pandemic, the program (i.e. clinical counselling, outdoor adventure-based learning, community involvement and academics) was delivered five days per week from September to June. During the COVID-19 pandemic, participants have been provided virtual support and modified in-person programming.
